Companies that Manufacture in the U.S.

With both the world’s population and the amount of disposable income people have on the rise, it’s worth noting the role American manufacturing companies play on a national and international stage.

While a great deal is said — both good and bad — about the state of manufacturing in the U.S. these days, the fact remains that American manufacturing is the backbone of our national economy.

When it comes to industrial output, the U.S. manufacturing sector represents more than 18 percent of the global production of goods each year. What’s more — from a purely economic perspective, American manufacturing contributes over $2 trillion to the nation’s GDP, supporting more than 12 million employees that make up roughly 8.5 percent of America’s workforce.

Which Companies Manufacture Products in the U.S.

Beyond economic statistics, there’s also something special about finding that “Made in USA” label on your favorite consumer items. As an ongoing assurance to their customers that their products are high-quality, it’s no wonder that iconic goods ranging from Zippo lighters and Gibson guitars to Harley-Davidson motorcycles and Airstream trailers are world-famous for being American-made.

On an even greater scale, it’s worth taking a look at the success of some of the largest companies that have decided to maintain some portion of their manufacturing in America:

           Apple

You don’t have to be a Mac user to appreciate the multinational electronics company Apple Inc. With global headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., Apple employs more than 120,000 workers, operates over 500 stores and generated more than $225 billion in revenue in 2017 alone.

           Boeing

Boeing is the largest company in the world when it comes to the aerospace industry. It’s also the number one American manufacturing exporter. With customers across 150 countries, Boeing leads the way in manufacturing commercial and military aircraft, as well as spacecraft and security systems. Also, as an aftermarket service provider, Boeing’s services are among the very best.

           Chevron

Headquartered in San Ramon, Calif., the Chevron Corporation is one of America’s largest energy companies with a multinational presence in over 180 countries. With operations that include the production, refining, transportation, marketing and distribution of oil, natural gas and other fuels, Chevron posted over $141 billion in revenue throughout 2017.

           Ford

From Henry Ford’s manufacturing vision in Dearborn, Michigan, the Ford Motor Company has grown into one the world’s biggest auto companies. In 2018 alone, Ford produced over 6.5 million cars, employed over 200,000 workers and generated a revenue of roughly $150 billion.

American-Made Inventions That Changed History

           American ingenuity is world-famous.

From the days of early pioneers and later industrial giants to modern high-tech and electronic groundbreakers, there’s something about being American that encourages thinking outside of the box to perfect an idea or invention.

           Breakthrough American Inventions

While not all concepts earn their creators fame and fortune, some do. What’s more: Every now and then, an idea comes along that truly shapes how we think, interact or view the world. The following American-made inventions are all in that category — from lighting up our nights to reshaping how and when we communicate:

           The Electric Light Bulb

In 1879, Thomas Alva Edison filed his now-famous U.S. patent for a carbon-filament electric bulb. The rest — as they say — is history. While many other inventors were working on similar designs at the time, Edison secured his spot as the father of the electric light bulb by creating a longer lasting product that could work reliably from a centralized power source. The fact that Edison would go on to build a business empire in electric power generation for the general public’s consumption didn’t harm his invention. So, the next time you reach for the light switch, remember how one American brought light into so many homes across our nation — and beyond.

           The Air Conditioner

While wealthy ancient Romans ran cool aqueduct water through their homes’ walls to beat the heat, it wasn’t until the beginning of the 20th century that the modern air conditioner was created. A young engineer from New York — Willis Carrier — invented a mechanized unit that ran air over water-cooled coils. In 1902, Carrier’s first air conditioner went into use to help combat the sweltering temperatures at the plant where he worked. Soon, other businesses saw the potential of Carrier’s invention. It didn’t take long for movie theaters to catch on — helping create the phenomenon we know today as the summer blockbuster.

           The Airplane

Even people who didn’t ace history in school know the names Wilbur and Orville Wright. On December 17, 1903, the brothers went to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and successfully flew their motorized airplane — the Wright Flyer I — over a distance of 852 feet in a time of 59 seconds. What people might not realize is that in 1878 as young boys, Wilbur and Orville were given a toy helicopter powered by rubber bands as a gift from their father, Milton Wright. Unbeknownst to Milton, he planted a seed in his sons’ minds that would result in one of the most significant transportation inventions of all time.

           The Moving Assembly Line

In 1913, the first moving assembly line went into operation when Henry Ford applied the principles of mass production to the assembly process of his famous Model T. It reduced the time it took to assemble one car from more than 12 hours to a little over two. While Ransom Olds — the famous Oldsmobile founder — is actually credited with inventing the assembly line a decade earlier, it was Ford who used conveyor belts and other mechanisms to move products from worker to worker to bring productivity and efficiency to a previously unimagined level.

           The Mobile Phone

In 1973, Martin Cooper — an American engineer working for Motorola — was the center of attention at a press conference when he made the world’s first call from a mobile cell phone. That call would go on to change the way we communicate and share information in our modern world. What’s also interesting to note is that Cooper’s first call was to Joel Engel — a rival AT&T engineer who was working on a similar project at the time.

How to Tell if a Product is Really Made in the U.S.

“Made in USA” is fast becoming a status symbol that’s synonymous with high-quality products.

American manufacturing is experiencing a resurgence due to factors such as reduced energy prices, affordable U.S. talent and the push to reshore formerly offshored jobs. Also, the label “Made in USA” is fast becoming a status symbol that’s synonymous with high-quality products. In fact, it serves as a marketing tool for American companies that want to take advantage of this growing wave of patriotism.

If you find yourself looking at labels to buy more American manufactured products, you’re far from alone. According to Consumer Reports, nearly eight out of 10 Americans prefer to buy products made in the U.S. rather than imported ones, and 60 percent of American consumers are willing to pay as much as 10 percent more for domestic goods.

How Do Products Get a Label?

Considering this, it’s no surprise that manufacturers and distributors want to get in on this trend and portray their products as being as American as your grandmother’s apple pie. But what’s involved in this labeling process? And why don’t all labels contain the same wording when it comes to their country of origin?

To answer these questions, it’s helpful to understand some of the fundamental rules governing goods sold in America. First of all, most regulations about the labeling of the country of origin of products have only been in existence since the 1990s. Since then, the increasing globalization of commerce and raw materials has muddied these waters incredibly.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which oversees the requirements for “Made in USA” labeling only mandates that a handful of products — including automobiles, wool, textiles and furs — must list their country of origin. For other products from consumer electronics to household appliances, labeling is supposed to be correct. However, it’s far from uniform.

American Made vs. Assembled in the U.S.

No matter how you word it, any label that gives an impression of an American-made product can encourage more sales and customer loyalty. Of course, the product itself must be of good quality, and the labeling needs to be straightforward and free of any fraudulent claims. However, not all labels are created equal.

According to the FTC, a “Made in USA” label can be put onto goods that contain at least 75 percent American made components. This is why you see other labels that read that a product is “Assembled in the U.S.,” which means the product’s components are most likely foreign-made, but Americans were employed to assemble the finished product.

In addition to “Made in USA” and “Assembled in USA” labels, there’s a growing trend to list what percentage of a product is from America. On these products, labels indicate that somewhere between 50 and 60 percent of a product’s components are American-made. Note that there are products sporting an American flag or some other patriotic symbol to portray themselves as an American brand — but offering little to no proof to back up the claim.

Why is American Manufacturing Making a Comeback?

For decades, successful manufacturing enterprises have relied heavily on going to where labor is most affordable to set up factories and related production facilities.

This practice of offshoring jobs — in order to shore up profits — has had such a detrimental impact on U.S. manufacturing that the subject has increasingly become a topic of debate in everything from business to politics.

Yet recently, a significant number of indicators are pointing to an American manufacturing comeback. To make sense out of this issue and get as close as possible to the truth of the matter, it helps to take a look at the overall impact of American manufacturing and its relation to the rest of the world.

Why Did Manufacturing Leave America in the First Place?

In the first decade of the 21st century, labor was much more affordable in many economies outside of the United States. It was so much cheaper that by many estimates, the U.S. manufacturing sector saw about six million jobs go overseas during this time — especially to countries like China. Companies ranging from mobile phone manufacturers to automakers discovered offshoring and went for it in droves, hoping to reap the rewards of lower labor and operating costs.

           The Impact on the U.S.

Even at the height of offshoring, certain American manufacturers stuck it out and kept their production facilities operating in the U.S. It often meant making difficult decisions and adapting to economic pressures. In more than one circumstance, it even involved adopting LEAN manufacturing principles imported from the waste-averse Japanese manufacturing sector.

The cumulative results of years of offshoring combined with the remaining U.S. manufacturers becoming more agile are somewhat surprising to some and perfectly predictable to others. In part due to the effects of U.S. offshoring, China’s economy has experienced tremendous growth. In fact, it’s now the second largest in the world. Moreover, wages in China have increased by approximately 200 percent in the last 10 years.

Nevertheless, many companies that offshored their production processes saw the quality of their products diminish — and, as a result, experienced a loss of customer loyalty. Meanwhile, many companies that continued operating in the U.S. saw their customer base grow, as people wanted the high-quality goods associated with American manufacturing.

Furthermore, due to longer shipping times when importing goods from overseas, businesses had to re-think their entire logistics and stocking processes — which was no small undertaking.

The Manufacturing Comeback and Its Benefits

In countries such as Mexico and China, where the manufacturing industry is strong, industrial employment has kept pace with population growth. In contrast, according to Barron’s, there was no growth in industrial employment between 1992 and 2017 in the U.S. — yet the population grew by 69 million. Experts predict that if American manufacturing makes a comeback — as it appears to be doing — simply keeping pace with population growth should result in an estimated 14 million additional manufacturing jobs over the next 20 years.

With the manufacturing sector expanding again in our country, the logistics sector will also grow. The resulting job growth will lead to a higher standard of living and more consumer confidence, which, in turn, will help build a stronger economy. That means a better position for American businesses not only on the domestic market, but also the international market.

We Have to Make It Here In America If We Are Going to Make It!

A multitude of daily choices we make impact more than ourselves and our families. They impact our community and our country. Manufacturing is the answer. We need to put Americans back to work!

When a factory closes, the dominos start falling. Every manufacturing job creates 15 jobs outside of the factory; the gas stations, the stores, the restaurants, the electricians and plumbers who maintain the factories, chefs, hair stylists, insurance agents and many more. When the factory goes, those jobs follow. When only one job is lost at a factory, 15 jobs in the community are at risk. It impacts everyone. Buying American recirculates money in our own economy and gives other Americans opportunities to prosper.

We need to understand, as a country, that we must protect and support our manufacturing jobs. We must fight to put Americans back to work! Consumers have amazing power in a country, and we can change our country, ourselves… now, without waiting for politicians. It’s really quite simple. Every time you buy something, make sure that it was made in America.

           Willing To Pay A Premium?

According to a Gallop poll, nearly two-thirds of Americans are willing to pay a premium price for products made in America. Some say twice as much. The good news is that we don’t have to. In fact, with overseas labor rates rising at a faster rate than they are in America (China 10% – 15% annually) many items made in America already cost less!

Not only can Americans do the work, but we can do it with better quality, we can do it faster, and we can do it at a lower price!

Economists state that if we all spend just 5 percent more on American made products; we will create a minimum of 1 million more jobs for Americans! We have to believe that Americans can compete. With the growing overseas wage gap and subsequent cost of goods produced quickly closing, it’s increasingly impossible for manufacturers to justify the other costs associated with offshoring including shipping, delivery delays, and the overhead that comes with maintaining large inventories.

When doing the math, as many as 1 million jobs would come back to the USA if companies would recognize the mathematical common sense for themselves and reshore their manufacturing processes.

           Massive Job Losses

Although domestic manufacturing jobs have been on the decline since the 1960’s, massive job losses in the U.S. began at the Millennium. Between 2000 and 2009, more than 5 million manufacturing jobs were lost due to ‘outsourcing’. That’s a fancy word for, ‘you’re fired’! Multiply that number by the 15 jobs outside of the factory that were also affected, and that quickly explains why Detroit (where 70,000 buildings lie abandoned), Philadelphia, Allentown, and dozens… hundreds of other U.S. cities are in the state of disparity, depression, and extreme disrepair. Today, it’s hard to find anybody who hasn’t been adversely affected. In reality, the great recession has touched all of us. We all know someone who has lost a job, their home, or their entire life savings.

Many Manufacturing Jobs Are Lower Middle Class

So, were those 5-plus million manufacturing positions that we lost truly that great? Were the jobs that were lost really better than the jobs that have replaced them? YES!!! Since the 1960’s, manufacturing has always paid substantially more than the minimum wage. Even today, the manufacturing jobs that remain pay an average of $20.17 an hour. That’s nearly three times the federal minimum wage. It’s enough to vault a worker out of poverty and solidly into the lower middle class.

Manufacturing is at the center of the economy; it’s highly connected with most other sectors such as transportation, retail, mining, utilities and business services. Manufacturing companies also account for about 77% of what the private sector spends on research and development each year. If it weren’t for manufacturing, there would be very little innovation in the United States.

           The Wrap Up

American manufacturing isn’t dead by any means. But the loss of well-paying manufacturing jobs has devastated the working class and made achieving the American dream increasingly difficult. Technological advancements and the rise of low-skilled manufacturing in China and other developing nations mean that fewer Americans work in factories, just as technological advancements 100 years ago meant that fewer Americans worked on farms.

The solution is not the politicians… it’s you and it’s me, the American consumer. Together everyone achieves more. Together we unite and together we buy American. In doing so, we support America and we support Americans… our neighbors, our brothers and sisters, our nation’s founding backbone. We all rise together!

6 Reasons to Keep Manufacturing Local in the United States

Quicker turnaround times, greater control over processes, better quality control, and the ability to scale up or down in a shorter period of time are a few great reasons for keeping manufacturing local in America! And there are many more…

History has shown that in an increasingly-standardized world, people that preserve a unique businesses model and a distinctive character experience a distinctive economic advantage. We firmly aspire to the philosophy that we can all do it so much better right here in America!

In the most recent data, manufacturers contributed $2.17 trillion to the U.S. economy in 2015. This figure has risen since the second quarter of 2009, when manufacturers contributed $1.70 trillion. Over that same time frame, value-added output from durable goods manufacturing grew from $0.87 trillion to $1.18 trillion, with nondurable goods output, up from $0.85 trillion to $0.99 trillion. In 2015, manufacturing accounted for 12.1 percent of gross domestic product in the economy. (Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis.)

According to non-profit advocacy group the Reshoring Initiative, offshoring resulted in a net loss of approximately 220,000 manufacturing jobs between 2000 and 2003. However, according to the group, the country added approximately as many jobs due to foreign investment and reshoring as it lost to offshoring in 2015. Some of the largest U.S.-based companies like Walmart, Ford, and Boeing have begun building factories domestically for operations that would likely have gone overseas a few years ago.

           Reason 1: Local Decision Making

Local ownership ensures that essential decisions are made locally by people who live, work and prosper in the community, and – therefore – will personally feel the impacts of their decisions. The local shops where these owners buy their groceries, service their vehicles, groom their pets, and attend to their healthcare are all directly and confidentially tied to the prosperity of their business and prosperity of their employees.

Reason 2: Keeping Dollars in the Local Economy

Compared to large box chain stores, locally-owned businesses recycle a much larger share of their revenue back into the local economy, enriching the entire community. Small-scale, locally owned businesses create communities that are more prosperous, entrepreneurial, connected, and generally better off across a wide range of metrics. These earned dollars are recirculated daily throughout the local community of businesses and families.

           Reason 3: Job and Wages

Locally-owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits than chains do. Studies show that locally-owned businesses are linked to higher income growth and lower levels of poverty, while big-box retailers – particularly Walmart – depress wages and benefits for retail employees. Studies in this section also quantify the costs of these big companies’ low wages to state healthcare programs and other forms of public assistance.

           Reason 4: Strong Middle-Class Jobs

Average manufacturing wages in the U.S. have experienced a sharp upswing, currently averaging an all-time high of $20.59 per hour including benefits as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. And 95% of the jobs come with health insurance. Factories pay better than retail and food service.

           Reason 5: Local, Local, Local

Local business ownership ensures that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and who will feel the impacts of those decisions. Having skin in the game really matters not only to the person making the decisions but to the multitude of employees and families affected by those decisions. Owners with integrity and character care about those people, their livelihood and their wellbeing, and make decisions accordingly.

           Reason 6: Competition

A marketplace encompassing tens-of-thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long term. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based not on a national sales plan, but on their own local interests and the needs of their local customers and employees, guarantees a much broader range of product choices and diversity.

           The Wrap Up

In the last decade, the U.S. has lost millions of manufacturing jobs to outsourcing. According to U.S. News and World Report, there are now 5.1 million fewer American manufacturing jobs than in 2001. Attractively, this dynamic is changing in recent years as we witness more manufacturing jobs returning to U.S. soil while manufacturing wages are on the rise. Total output from American manufacturing relative to gross domestic product (GDP) is back to pre-recession levels in 2016, with more than half-a-million new jobs having been created. According to the Reshoring Initiative, 15% of this job growth results from reshoring. There remains hope for the renewed prosperity of this nation that our previous generations fought and died for.
